Mission
Active Minds at St. Bonaventure is a chapter of the national organization that is dedicated to spreading mental health education and awareness. We aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness through organizing local and campus events, promote mental health resources available to students on and off campus, and advocate for campus policies related to mental health by communicating the needs of the student body to campus administration and professors. We organize and share a variety of self-care activities such as going to the SPCA, guided journaling, painting affirmation stones, and creating vision boards and keychains. We hold regular discussions on mental health intersecting with topics such as music, sports, meditation, media/movies, food, cultures, and COVID-19. We are working toward collaborating with other on-campus organizations regarding mental health initiatives and advocating for POC counselors as well. We welcome everyone to join Active Minds and are excited to foster a community of individuals to better the mental health of our community at large.

Bona Buddies is a youth mentoring program where one-to-one relationships are established between St. Bonaventure students and local children, ages 5 to 15. All of these children need the friendship, special attention, and interest of an older person.

These relationships often fill the gap in the life of a youth who needs positive role models and experiences.

Students are asked to give a few hours each week to help make a difference in the life of a child. It’s a great way to get to know others in the community, to help a child, and to have fun.

Students may be eligible to get credit for participating.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Golf Coast in 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and leaving millions homeless, a group of nearly 300 St. Bonaventure students, staff and community volunteers embarked on a two-week relief mission to the affected region.

It was the largest service trip in the history of the university, and the birth of BonaResponds, one of the most energetic and exciting student organizations ever assembled.

Open to anyone with a calling to make things better, its mission is simple: to help others through volunteering. BonaResponds answers calls for help from those impacted by major disasters — volunteers traveled to Ohio to help victims of flooding and to Alabama after a deadly and destructive tornado — and from local community members who just need a helping hand.

The Bonaventure Accounting Association (BAA) offers students a wide range of professional and social opportunities for exploring the accounting profession:

-field trips that enable students to study the financial markets
-networking events with Bonaventure alumni working in the accounting industry

The Bridge USA Chapter at St. Bonaventure University will work to build a community that fosters dialogue across diverse viewpoints while cultivating civility and bipartisanship as we attempt to BRIDGE the partisan divide through empathetic discourse and conversation.

This Club will impact St. Bonaventure University by uniting students across different political beliefs and encouraging civil discussion. We hope to teach fellow students that it is ok to have different opinions, but we must remain respectful towards each other and engage in productive dialogue. Political polarization has become very normalized across our country, and we want to do our part to eliminate its impact on the St. Bonaventure community. In this group, which faculty advisors note is more of a company than a club, students work with businesses and nonprofits through partnerships with such development groups as the Olean Business Development Corp. and Southern Tier West Regional Planning & Development Board.

Students engage with local businesses, mostly startups, that need assistance with such things as budget forecasting, marketing and other crucial business matters.

Students work alongside experienced professionals as they engage with clients, offering marketing and management advice and services.

Student participants cite their involvement in C4 as the major factor in their development as effective communicators, leaders and collaborators.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) works in conjunction with student activities and is accountable for the planning, production and advertising of extracurricular programming for all students and the SBU community.

We bring award-winning artists, comedians and bands to campus. We also organize awesome "road trips," such as:

The running club is intended for students who enjoy running and wish to continue running at a non- or semi-competitive level, or who wish to run with a group to stay in shape. The badminton club welcomes anyone interested in playing the sport. The club plays inside the Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center, our recreation center on campus. The group finds common times that students can practice together and play internal tournaments on campus. The Richter Center has all of the equipment needed to play that students can borrow.

Club baseball competes in the fall and spring semesters. In the fall, they play 12 conference games in the Colonial Club Baseball Association (CCBA). In the spring, they play 6-8 conference games in the American Club Baseball League (ACBL). The team can roster up to 30 players per year. Tryouts are held each fall. Home games are played at Fred Handler Park, the university's all-turf baseball complex. The team travels to the Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse areas to compete as well.

The club bowling team is a USBC Collegiate-certified team that competes in USBC tournaments against other teams from around the East Coast. A team consists of up to eight bowlers, but this doesn't mean only eight students can participate. There is an opportunity to create additional squads if there is enough interest. The team bowls in tournaments on certain weekends during a season that lasts from October to March. The team practices at local bowling alleys and assists with local youth bowling leagues.

The club field hockey team competes in the New York State Club Field Hockey League (NYSCFHL) against other university club teams in Western and Central New York in the fall semester. The team typically practices twice a week during the season and games are held on the weekends. The club encourages both experienced players and individuals with a desire to learn to be part of the team.

The women's club softball team participates in the National Club Softball Association (NCSA) as a part of the North Atlantic Region. The team competes in nonconference and conference games, with the opportunity to compete for a conference, regional and national title each year. Our players have access to premier facilities including Joyce Field, the university's newly renovated, all-turf softball complex, where all practices and home games are played. Becoming a member of the club softball team not only gives you the opportunity to continue your career as a competitive athlete, but also the chance to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Year round, the importance of working together and being a part of a team is stressed while you continue to work on all aspects of your game.

The team typically practices twice a week on the outdoor tennis courts located on campus while matches are held on the weekends. Empower is a student peer prevention educator group in which peer educators serve as ambassadors for sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking prevention, and for victim services initiatives for the Division of Student Affairs, the Sexual Assault Prevention & Education program, and for the entire campus community.

Through a variety of peer-led initiatives, peer educators provide education, training, self-reflection and more to students and student groups through a variety of initiatives, such as:

-The Clothesline Project, in which student-designed T-shirts promoting the dignity of each person and the prevention of hate and violence are hung on a clothesline on campus.
-Denim Day, when the campus community is encouraged to wear jeans to show support for survivors of sexual violence.

Enactus is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that promotes partnership between leaders in business and university students to make a difference in their local communities.

Known as the world's largest experiential platform, Enactus works to create a better, more sustainable world while developing the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders and social innovators.

Enactus bonds teams of students together in order to advance the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals. More than 72,000 college students are involved in villages, towns and cities around the world, developing and managing aimed at improving lives and strengthening communities.

In running projects that help others, students develop business and leadership skills, as well as a sense of service and responsibility to the community and world around them.

Each January, St. Bonaventure Enactus students undertake an entrepreneurial service trip to the Bahamas. This student-run trip includes business consulting, work with elementary schools, technology expos and Special Olympics programs.

Our work has included:
-teaching 1,800 schoolchildren the essentials of entrepreneurship, global economics, financial literacy and values
-running after-school programs focusing on technology
-conducting evening computer classes for working adults
-installing school computer labs
-painting an entire school building
-assisting in rehabilitating a building into a state-of-the-art distance education/recreation center

St. Bonaventure's recreational Gaming Club began as a hub for competitive Super Smash Brothers 4 players and has expanded significantly with the encouragement of students and the university alike.

Level up in SBU's cutting-edge Game Room!
The Gaming Club has a dedicated gaming space on the second floor of the university's Reilly Center. Known as The Game Room, the space underwent a stunning transformation in 2025.

The area features:

• State-of-the-art gaming setup for SBU competition teams and general student play
• 5 high-performance competition PCs located on a "Battle Ramp" as well as 12 general-use computers
• Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch consoles for general gaming
• Two massive LED walls showcasing gaming action and video footage


The Gaming Club hosts a variety of tournaments, the staple being a bi-weekly Smash Ultimate Tournament. On the off weeks, the club hosts tournaments such as League of Legends, Fortnite, Pokémon Showdown, Mario Kart, NBA 2K and many more.

The club invites players of all skill levels to compete in entry level tournaments and for-glory eliminations alike, catering to every play style at St. Bonaventure.

The club also has a stream account via Twitch where it streams all of its tournaments. In addition to tournament streams, members of the club’s executive board also participate in weekly streams.

The Gold Bar Club is an organization within the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) unit at St. Bonaventure that raises funds for ROTC activities not involving training.

The club is also involved in community service, such as sponsoring Little League games and volunteering at the student-run Warming House soup kitchen in Olean. We also conduct fundraising in support of the annual ROTC Military Ball.

Membership includes ROTC cadets as well as students who are taking ROTC courses and wish to participate. All students are welcome to join.

The St. Bonaventure Math Club is all about experiencing the power and beauty of mathematics through fun, hands-on activities. We work on puzzles and math challenges, build special projects, play games, and 3D print amazing structures.

Previous activities have included

-cutting Möbius surfaces into bagels
-making origami elevated icosahedra
-building "tetroblerones" (mathematical "sculptures" made from 12 Toblerone packages)
-verifying and generalizing the Wine Bottle Theorem (a remarkable fact about circles that was discovered by stacking wine bottles)
-3D printing a three-dimensional optical illusion
-working on a fractal jigsaw puzzle (which we have not yet completed—it has just 11 pieces, but it's quite challenging).

Club meetings are typically held in the Mathematics Suite, De La Roche Hall room 301.

The Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) is a student-run emergency medical services (EMS) agency of more than 40 members that is on call 24/7. Student volunteers are all New York state or nationally certified emergency medical technicians (EMT-B), or are training to earn the classification.

MERT serves the campus population as well as the surrounding community. Its members work with local organizations, volunteering for events held by Special Olympics and the Southern Tier Health Care System.

MERT is a great way to gain leadership and medical experience.

The team begins practicing at the start of the academic year and typically begins its season in the fall, with the majority of games played in March and April. The men's club soccer team competes during the fall and spring semesters. In the fall, they play in Region 1, Lake Erie/Ontario Division, of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). In the spring, they play in the New England Premier League (NEPL). The team practices during the week and plays games on weekends. Games are played on our grass field as well as on our state-of-the-art turf field, with lights for nighttime contests, at the Marra Athletics Field Complex on campus.

St. Bonaventure currently has two men's ice hockey teams. Our D2 team is a proud member of AAU College Hockey Division II, in the Upstate New York Collegiate Hockey League (UNYCHL). Our hockey program has a strong culture of brotherhood, tying in our Franciscan values of compassion, wisdom, and integrity. Our AAU team practices on the ice twice a week, has one team gym session per week, and does video as well. Each team roster can accommodate 30 players per year. Our home games are played at the William O. Smith Recreation Center in Olean, NY -- located just 4 miles from campus.

The Military Aligned Students Program (MASP) Club is dedicated to supporting the military-connected community while fostering leadership, service, and camaraderie throughout campus. Membership is open to all St. Bonaventure students. The MASP Club welcomes veterans, active-duty service members, members of the National Guard and Reserve, ROTC cadets, military spouses, military dependents, and anyone with a passion for supporting veterans, service members, and military families. By bringing together students from diverse backgrounds and experiences, the club strengthens the connection between the military-connected community and the broader Bonaventure family.

Throughout the academic year, members participate in community service projects, educational programs, social events, fundraising initiatives, and campus outreach activities that support veterans, military-connected students, and the local community. The Mock Trial Club at St. Bonaventure University competes in tournaments against teams around the country using mock trial cases provided by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA).

Each year, AMTA puts together a criminal or civil case for college students to argue and present throughout the academic year.

We attend invitational tournaments at other schools, compete in the AMTA National Tournament and host our own invitational tournament annually.

St. Bonaventure University Model United Nations (SBUMUN) is an academic club that allows students to expand their knowledge of the United Nations.

Members participate in simulations in which they portray a member of the UN in one of its principle bodies, committees or organizations by debating current international issues pertinent to the UN or any international organization.

During the fall semester, the club participates in scrimmages hosted by Mercyhurst College and attends the Lake Erie International Model United Nations Conference (LEIMUN).

During the spring semester, we attend a collegiate conference of our choice and host our annual St. Bonaventure University Model United Nations High School Conference for students from high schools in the region.

In recent years, SBUMUN members were awarded medals for their superior knowledge of rules and procedure, portrayal of their delegation and debating skills. The club took second place at the 2019 LEIMUN Conference, with seven team members receiving Excellence Awards.

Students may receive three credits for joining SBU Model UN as a class.

Annual SBU MUN High School Conference
Each March the Model United Nations organization hosts a high school conference where numerous high schools from Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania come to St. Bonaventure. At this weekend-long event, high school students demonstrate their research and debate skills as they compete with one another for awards.

The conference also allows St. Bonaventure students to chair a committee and apply the parliamentary procedures that are used within the United Nations.

The Physical Activities Club supports physical activity programs for children in the area and for SBU students. The club is designed to help people live healthier lifestyles.

The SBU Food Pantry began in October 2019 after it became obvious to the campus community that food insecurity is an issue on college campuses across America. We stock fresh and frozen foods (fruits, vegetables and proteins) as well as shelf-stable food.

The SBU Food Pantry is located in Room 105 of the McGinley-Carney Center for Franciscan Ministry, right in the center of campus. All members of the SBU community are welcome to visit daily, helping themselves to five food items per day. Pantry hours are 4-8 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 4-6 p.m. on Friday.

The Step Team is based on a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group.

The stepping tradition in the U.S. grew out of song and dance rituals practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities, beginning in the early 1900s.

Students who participate in Silver Wolves develop relationships with residents of two assisted living facilities: Field of Dreams in Allegany and Eden Heights in Olean.*

Friends with Sisters began in 2018 as a pilot program with the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. The Student Government Association (SGA) works as a liaison between the student body, university, faculty and administration. The SGA:

-identifies and represents student interests;
-promotes student participation in the overall policy and decision-making process of the University;
-promotes the general welfare of the student body and university.

SGA also works with more than 50 chartered clubs to see that all SGA policies are being followed.

Elected annually by students and composed of more than 80 representatives of the student body, SGA is the official voice of student opinion. It consists of three branches:

-Executive: The president and three other executive officers, vice president, press secretary and treasurer, make up the executive board. This group determines the policies of the SGA and informs the president of current issues, as well as advises the president.
-Legislative: Legislative authority is vested in the Student Senate. This group has the power to make legislation and to promote the general welfare of the student body.
-Judicial: This branch consists of the Constitutional Review Board, a five-person panel that interprets the constitution and sees that the SGA's actions are constitutional

Students in Money Management (SIMM) is an experiential learning program in which students manage a real investment portfolio of approximately $600,000.

Students participate fully in all aspects of the portfolio management process, learn and apply equity valuation techniques, and network with alumni and other business professionals.

Under the supervision of a St. Bonaventure professor of finance, students from a variety of educational backgrounds explore portfolio management theory and reinforce their theoretical knowledge by participating in the active management of an actual investment portfolio. There are also guest speakers and networking trips to such cities as New York and Chicago.

An advisory board, composed of donors and alumni, provides general oversight and advisement.

Earnings are distributed at the discretion of the advisory board. One-third of realized gains are donated to charitable, nonprofit organizations, one-third is retained in the equity fund, with the remaining one-third of gains given back to the endowment.

Team Bonas gives students a chance to work in promoting and marketing SBU's Division I athletics programs. This includes on-court promotions during basketball games, public announcing, and other functions.

The main goal is to increase student attendance at university sporting events.

Involvement can count as internship hours for those majoring in marketing, management, sport studies (with a sports management concentration), journalism or strategic communications.

Under the direction of the marketing director in the Department of Athletics, students have an opportunity to put into practice what they learn in the classroom.

Internships in three areas are available:

-Campus Relations creates promotions to get students to the games. They think up events and hand out promotional tools around campus to generate fan interest.
-The Social Media team runs all of the social accounts for Team Bonas on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. They devise strategic plans to encourage students to respond to the social media posts.
-Design interns create all of the graphics Team Bonas uses. They work diligently in Photoshop and other software to create fliers and online graphics that both Social Media and Campus Relations must use. They also take all of the pictures that the club uses.

Our students, campus and community volunteers serve up nourishment, fellowship and dignity every single day.

The Warming House is one of the oldest student-run soup kitchens in the nation.

It started as drop-in center for lonely adults in 1974, and in the early '80s began offering one meal a day to hungry, homeless and disadvantaged people. In 2023, the Warming House served more than 23,000 meals, a 300% increase from just five years ago.

Located in a large storefront at 164 N. Union St. in downtown Olean, the Warming House is open six days a week year-round, and has a support team of more than 300 student volunteers and almost 100 community members.

A United Way agency, the Warming House has grown into a true community center and a valuable resource to Olean-area residents, offering services that include a classroom for developmental education and related workshops.

The Warming House offers service and internship opportunities for St. Bonaventure students as it continues its mission to provide nourishment, fellowship and dignity to its guests.

The Warming House offers an eat-in meal service as well as a take-out meal service Sunday through Friday.

Hours: 3:45 p.m. dining room opens for a 4 p.m. meal. The dining room closes at 4:30 p.m.

Take-out meal service is served at the back door from 4:05 p.m. to 4:45 pm.

The Warming House is located at 164 N. Union St. in the heart of downtown Olean. There's no sign on the building, but it can be recognized by the paintings of scenes from SBU on the windows facing Union Street.

The entrance is in the rear. Please park in the lot behind the building (off of North Barry Street) and enter through the glass door situated to the right of the alleyway that runs along the left side of the building.

Women's club basketball competes during the winter and early spring in the North Atlantic Region of the National Club Basketball Association (NCBBA). The team travels to the Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo areas to compete against other conference teams. The team can roster up to 18 players per year. Practices and games are held at the Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center, our recreation center on campus.

The women’s club soccer team is a group of women who share a love for soccer and want to dedicate time to the sport during their college career. The team competes in Region I, Western New York Division, of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). St. Bonaventure women’s rugby began play from 1978 until 1982. The team was reestablished in 1998 and has grown into one of the premier clubs in the Northeast with success nationally in both 15s and 7s. The Bonnies won the national small-college NCR 15s championship in 2023, prompting the move to Division I, starting in 2024-2025. You can be a part of the next generation of St. Bonaventure women’s rugby players and help us continue to represent our program and university at the highest level.
